In this session, NESsT staff shared results from the new NESsT book -- "Not Only for Profit: Innovative Mechanism for Philanthropic Investment" - to illustrate key lessons learned by venture philanthropists around the world as well as current trends in the field in the emerging market countries of Central Europe and Latin America.

11:00 Forum Roundtable: Pioneers in Venture Philanthropy (Ballrooms B&C)
The Forum Roundtable provided a unique opportunity for participants to hear first-hand experiences from leading pioneers in the field of venture philanthropy from around the world. Following a facilitated discussion among staff of several leading venture philanthropy funds regarding the primary challenges of implementing a venture philanthropy approach, participants had an opportunity to direct questions to the circle of pioneers for open discussion.

Implications of Venture Philanthropy for the Nonprofit Sector
The Forum Discussion allowed participants to understand the implications of the emerging fields of social entrepreneurship and venture philanthropy for the nonprofit sector. Discussants engaged in open discussion about: the rationale for the emergence of entrepreneurship in the nonprofit sector; contrasting arguments for and against introducing entrepreneurship into the nonprofit sector; and the implications of social entrepreneurship and venture philanthropy for the nonprofit sector, generally, and for the relationship between nonprofit organizations and donors, specifically.

This session examined the strategies and practice of venture capital and the adaptation of this strategy for investing in social entrepreneurs through a venture philanthropy approach. The focus of the discussion centered on four key areas: portfolio creation, methods of investment, capacity-building engagement, and performance measurement.

This session involved a discussion of the distinct challenges faced by social entrepreneurs in Europe, Latin America and the United States. Presenters concentrated particularly on those obstacles common during the start-up phase of organizational development (i.e. stakeholder skepticism, legal obstacles, and early funding difficulties).

The session examined the challenges of developing a new hybrid of business and nonprofit management education for these “mutant managers” in the field and strategies for developing this new professional career track for young entrepreneurs and managers.
